Smedley-Noble Project
Solar Illumination of Cemetery Flag Poles Allows "Ole Glory" to Fly
Around-the-Clock Thanks to the Efforts of The Smedley-Noble Project
The idea  to  provide illumination  for  flag poles overlooking veteran's
gravesites originated when our detachment's Sr. Vice Commandant, Steve
Noble visited  Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando to place small flags at the
grave sites of fallen veterans.

Inquiring why the main flag poles bore no colors, he learned that due
to lack of manpower to raise and lower the flags, and no electricity to provide
lighting  in  accordance  with  the  U.S. Flag  Code, the decision was made to
hoist the colors only for special occasions.

Thus the need to solve the problem by
installing  solar  light fixtures, gave birth to
The  Smedley-Noble Project.   Over the last
18-months our detachment has installed flag
pole lights  in  the veterans sections of three
Central Florida cemeteries . . . . Greenwood
cemetery  in  Orlando and  Pineywood  and
Palm cemeteries  in  the city of Winter Park.

The project is now being considered by numerous other Marine Corps League detachments thru out the country.    The latest Central Florida solar lighting installation took place at the Conway United Methodist
Church cemetery in Orlando and was funded as an Eagle Scout project of the church's Boy Scout troop.  Life scout, Daniel Clifton, and members of  his troop held a car wash as part of their effort to raise funds for the
flag illumination equipment.  Daniel Clifton has since become an Eagle Scout.
